Questions on graphics and few others

First of all, hi! Really appreciate your work on Alite Stardust, I'm having great fun with it :)
Few questions I have:
1. Do you have any plans for a 'legacy' graphics mode: either all wireframes a la BBC Micro Elite, or flat coloured a la Archimedes Elite or Frontier Elite II et al.? I'd like to see one implemented for the sake of nostalgia and stuff.
2. How hard would it be to edit the icons and the HUD? I understand the game is now open-sourced (or maybe I mistaken), so some info on the filetypes would be nice, and is it possible to edit the HUD's colour scheme? The blue text and radar is a bit hard to see IMO; red/gold like the original ports could work.
3. I have seen your future implementations list, but do you have any plans for quality-of-life enhancements for the current GUI, and some what more life-like AI a la Archimedes Elite (e.g. Vipers patrolling sectors in packs, friendlies mining, pirates attacking other craft and maybe each other, Thargoids attacking other ships other than the player's, et cetera)
4. Also, do you plan to implement actual asteroid belts? Or is it already in the game and I haven't progressed far enough?
5. I understand this is a hobby more than an actual job, but do you plan on setting Patreon or any other forms of donations? I'm sure plenty of people out there would really like to see this game evolves further, and are willing to fund it.

That's all I have for now! Pardon my bad English.

Answers...

Hi MrHax and welcome to the forum :)...

I'm glad that you like the game! Let me see if I can answer your questions...

1. Currently, that is not planned. Would it be hard to code? Hmm... I suppose not too much. So, if you want to give it a shot, the source of Alite (albeit _slightly_ outdated; I haven't had time to upload the enhancements of 1.3.1 yet) are on github: https://github.com/CmdrStardust/Alite/

2. Not hard at all :). The icons are on github, too (same link; more precisely, you'll find the assets here: https://github.com/CmdrStardust/Alite/tree/master/Resources/assets). If you want to edit them, please go ahead :)... I'd very much like to see better quality "navigation icons" myself... Unfortunately, I can't draw... So, if you have a new set of icons and would like to share them: Just send them over and I'll integrate them...

3. "Quality-of-life" enhancements?! I'm sorry, could you please elaborate? I don't understand that part of the question... Life-like AI: Yes, by all means! I do want to do that... But this will take time. Hobby project is correct. And my time is limited. You can see how long it took me to implement Commander Gehling's request (the flat button layout). I needed 4 months to do that, and it was a relatively simple task. Changing the AI... *Ouch*. But yes: It's on my list. I am thinking along the same lines as you: Different factions, some peaceful, some menacing, pirates raiding a system, etc...

4. Asteroid belts: Nice idea.... Never thought about them. They're not in the game (yet ;)).

5. Do look here: http://alite.mobi/downloads -- there's a "donate" button on the page. -- You having fun playing the game, however, is the best payment I could receive :).

Thanks!

Philipp

Re: New icons?

Glad to hear that! I almost thought my questions would be in vain, considering the last post here was months ago.
I skimmed through the source like you said, and turns out replacing icons probably wouldn't be as hard as I thought! They are all in .png form, easier to edit than say, bmp or some others. Although.. if you like some new icons, given my limited equipment, the best I could do is pixel art, the kind like my avatar there <--- but if you require, I can conjure up some more high definition art, with proper shading if you wish. I could send you an example of my own work (techinically a hobby) if you need some.

Though I suppose pixellated icons wouldn't be so bad, as long as the rest of the GUI is similiarly styled... awful lot of work I suppose.

Go ahead :)

Go ahead :)

What I dislike most about the current set of icons is that they don't feel "the same". They seem to not belong together... If you can do better, I'm always willing to put them in.

Thanks in advance...

I suppose I can do that! I'll

I suppose I can do that! I'll get to it once I have time, and will send some examples over to you.

My only concern over asteroid

My only concern over asteroid belts is where to put them.
Elite never had them and the single planet per star setup kind of makes it tricky to drop one in.
I suppose we could make use of the 3 dimensional space and have them orbiting the sun at an angle (so as not to hit the planet).
OR
What about them on a massive orbit, so if the pilot goes past the distance of star to planet they find the belt? Similar to if we flew beyond Earth orbit?

Asteroid Belt Placement

Well, I haven't put too much thoughts into asteroid belts, yet, but in a "typical" Elite way, they could easily be implemented as "goodies" in some (few) remote locations. I.e. most star-planet systems do not have an asteroid belt at all, whereas some might have one somewhere between star and planet, and the player will have to navigate through them.

Now, the asteroid belt implementation in itself isn't so easy: Some things that come to mind:

  • Performance on lower-ended devices
  • Torus drive interaction: Usually, an asteroid does not stop the torus drive from working; an asteroid belt should
  • AI tactics -- the AI is still lousy (working on it as I type this :)), but once the improvements (rewrite) are in place, the AI needs to take asteroid belt maneuvering into account; otherwise the NPC ships will be busy evading all the time
  • ...

That's the most important points that come to mind right now; generally, I like the idea, but I cannot say at this time, when I will come around to actually implement this. AI comes first... (Plus any crucial bug that is reported, of course)
