1.4.7 works around a bug in Android 5

Android 5 introduces a problem in the SoundPool: Loading of small sound files suddenly takes a long time; see this issue for details: https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=81187

Alite 1.4.7 now loads its sounds in a background thread, so that it will start on Android 5 devices, too. Note that it may take up to two full minutes until (finally!) all sounds are loaded. So, it can happen that some sounds cannot be heard initially, but they will be loaded after some more game time.

There is still an issue in 1.4.7, which I do not completely undertand. After the first installation of Alite, the accelerometer controls (sometimes??) do not work at all. A reboot of the phone fixes this and afterwards, the accelerometer controls always work as expected (even after a re-install). No clue as to why, though... I'm still investigating.

You can download version 1.4.7. here (as the all-in-one-solution) or in the PlayStore, which is preferable, unless your phone has problems with expansion files.

1.4.6 really fixes the accelerometer control...

In version 1.4.5 I tried to fix the accelerometer control problems, which occured if you were playing Alite lying down. I didn't succeed. True: The up/down movement didn't change mid-movement anymore, but there were "strange" effects in the Cobra's roll...

Thanks to Nik and Torsten, I am now very happy to announce: Version 1.4.6 has perfect accelerometer control. No matter in what orientation you are holding your device.

Have fun!

You can download the all-in-one solution here, or go to the PlayStore (or wait for the update) to get the version with expansion files.

Another minor change: I slightly altered the color of cargo canisters so that they can be distinguished from asteroids.

Alite 1.4.5 fixes sudden direction changes

Alite players occasionally complained about sudden direction changes when using accelerometer controls. I always thought it had to do with the orientation guessing system of Alite: You can either play it in landscape or reverse landscape mode. You can thus pick the orientation that best works for your phone jack position. However, this was only a part of the problem.

I wouldn't have been able to resolve the issue, had I not gotten an error report which complained about not being able to play the game _while lying in bed_! That made me curious. So I held the device flat above my head and much to my horror, I suddenly experienced sudden direction changes. As usual, once a test has been found, the reason for the error was quickly found and corrected, so thanks to Nik for reporting this :).

The update should be available momentarily on the PlayStore and if you need the single file solution, you can download it here.

One more thing: At least one Commander has found the famed planet Raxxla in Alite. :) So, if you haven't, you should keep on looking for it. (Yes, it really _does_ exist in the game)

Another update -- TWO updates, actually

Yesterday, I received a bug report telling me about an exception, which occurs after receiving mission number 4. I fixed the bug and released version 1.4.3 (OBB) to the PlayStore immediately. I _have_ tested it before putting it to the store, but during the testing process, I circumvent the expansion file download, which in this case proved to be fatal: I had mistakenly increased the expansion file version number, although the expansion file wasn't updated... The consequence? Alite wouldn't work anymore... *Ouch*.

So today, I provided version 1.4.4, which is already in the PlayStore. It fixes the mission 4 bug, _and_ the wrong expansion file number (yes, I have tested it this time :)).

Version 1.4.4 is also available from this site as all-in-one solution. Just use this link here. (In case you are wondering: Version 1.4.3 is _not_ available as single file version -- that wouldn't make sense).

Alite 1.4.2 released

Steven Phillips worked his magic again and greatly improved the medium speed Docking Computer. You can now see your Cobra being docked in time warp speed if you set the option in "Control Options". This does cut the wonderful "Blue Danube" remix a little short, though... :) The new version can be downloaded from the PlayStore as usual, or you can get the all-in-one solution from here.

Another issue that was resolved in this version was pausing when explosions were visible on the screen. Previously, Alite crashed in those instances. Now, it works...

Good hunting, Commanders! --- And have fun!!

Alite 1.4.1 released

We fixed some bugs in Alite 1.4.1. Since there was a corrupt image in the expansion pack file, we had to provide another update for that one, too (which increases the upload size from 1.0 MB to ~400 MB... Bugger). Along with the broken image, we fixed the Planet Information screen during witch space: If you tried to access it previously, it measured a distance between "null" and the nearest star systems. Oooups :). Fixed now, the current Cobra position is now taken into account.

The most interesting feature in Alite 1.4.1 is the "medium speed" docking computer. If you're clean and you would like to actually see how the docking computer docks your Cobra, but would still not like to waste too much time, the docking computer will now land with enabled time warp. Quite a sight, so give it a whirl...

Alite 1.4.0 comes with big changes

Hi everyone,

I have just uploaded Alite 1.4.0 and I am very happy to announce that this is the first version of Alite, which I have not programmed all on my own: Steven Phillips has contributed to the game by implementing the "TimeWarp" feature, which rids us all of the annoying travel to the space station! If you cannot activate the torus drive, because friendly traders are around, you can now activate the time warp, which lets you travel at 10 times the normal speed -- or at least, it looks that way. In truth, the TimeWarp engine puts the pilot of a Cobra in a light form of stasis, so your mind operates much slower than usual. The computer compensates for the slow reaction, so that you can still normally control your Cobra while approaching the station much faster than before... As soon as enemies arrive, the TimeWarp is automatically turned off, and moreover: If you're traveling at full speed and all ships in the vicinity are gone, the TimeWarp automatically engages the torus drive...

Another change in Alite 1.4.0 is the legal system: It is no longer a problem to scoop up contraband goods. If you scoop up a contraband good and sell it, you _will_ be punished. But you can choose to eject the good by going to your inventory screen while in flight and tapping the item you wish to eject twice. Note that you need to have a fuel scoop installed to use this feature.

Other than that, reports have been coming in from players who lost their savegames, after a crash of Alite. A general word of advice: As much as I'd like Alite to be bug free -- it just isn't! (Sorry!!) But, thanks to your reports, we're getting better... Still: Please do save your commander in a new slot (i.e. not an "autosave" slot). Thus, it should never be overwritten. Once you have saved your commander in a new slot, you can use that slot to overwrite it manually, whenever you want (and you should do often; say after each successful docking, just to be safe). But I _did_ change the autosave behavior in Alite 1.4.0, so now the autosaves _should_ not be overwritten anymore (I hope).

Some other, minor fixes, have been included, too: If you lost your docking computer while it was active, it wasn't deactivated, and I found a couple of typos in the library. Steven has also fixed the clipping in the highlighted buttons, so they look a lot cleaner now.

The new version is available from the PlayStore at https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.phbouillon.android.game... and the All-In-One solution is available here.

Have fun!!

All-In-One Solution 1.3.4b available

I just uploaded http://alite.mobi/sites/default/files/Alite-1.3.4b-SFI.apk -- this version doesn't change anything really (except for the background, which is back to the original one instead of showing the slightly darker version), but it should stop any "desire" of Alite to regularly update to the latest version. So, if you have the same problems as forum user Falken (http://alite.mobi/comment/116#comment-116), download the new version.

AI research

The one thing, which I do not like about Alite is its dumb AI. So I am currently researching various AI techniques, which might help here. Behavior Trees is one option, Goal Oriented Action Planning is another one. I don't have much experience in AI, the most complex thing I ever coded was a PacMan clone, which used A* for the individual ghosts, so I expect that I'll have to invest a lot of time to get Alite's AI right. Please be patient, while I am experimenting. If you have any suggestions/ideas regarding the AI, please feel free to post in the forum.

White background

Oh boy... When I made the PlayStore version of Alite 1.3.4 I forgot that I experimented with darker backgrounds, which are not part of the expansion pack file. Hence, yesterday's update in the PlayStore now displays a white background! Sorry folks! I've uploaded a fix already, it should be distributed by PlayStore within the hour...

This does not affect the all-in-one version that you can download from this web-site.
